When it seems difficult, to even take your next step let alone worship God, remember that God is still worthy of your worship. Amid God’s creation, you can find peace as you quietly listen. Worship Him with your heart.
As you read this story, think about how you would worship God differently if one of your senses were taken from you.
Don’t Take My Sight
As I sat quietly at the ocean’s edge digging my toes into the cool sand, a gentle breeze ruffled my hair. Here I found peace when life became difficult. I listened to the rhythm of the waves meeting the shore. In the distance, I could hear an occasional call of a seagull. I gazed in awe at the beautiful sunset before me. Words could never do this justice I thought. “Lord, please never take my sight from me.” I prayed. “I don’t ever want to miss the beauty you create.”
The Stranger
Suddenly, a shuffling nearby startled me from my prayer. An elderly gentleman stood beside me. His distinguished-looking white hair contrasted his dark skin which seemed to take on a glow from the sunset. In his thin aged, arthritic hand, he held a white cane. He was blind!
“Ma’am? Has the Lord painted another beautiful sunset this evening?” He asked, facing the ocean.
“Yes, in fact, I was just sitting here thanking Him for it.” I lowered my gaze even though he could not see me. I was ashamed of the prayer I had just prayed. Had he heard it?
“Would you be so kind as to describe it to me?” You could see the anticipation on his weathered face as he waited for my reply.
God’s Masterpiece
“I’ll do my best,” I told him. I closed my eyes and stepped into his world as I tried to feel the colors of the sunset. I let my heart lead me as I explained. “The top of the sky is like a cool stream washing continuously over your feet. It’s so refreshing. The middle is a warm plush blanket that tucks you in on a frigid evening. It’s a warmth that makes you feel safe. Where the water meets the sky, it’s like sitting next to a fire, one you can’t get close to although you can feel the intense heat on your face. Throughout the sky, the wisps of clouds are like whispers of wind touching your cheeks.” As I finished, a warm sense of peace fell over me. My heart felt so full at that moment. I just sat there lost in the beauty as I listened to the waves crashing on the beach.
Then I remembered the man standing beside me; I opened my eyes. He was still facing the ocean. His entire face radiated a sense of worship and delight. “It just fills the soul, doesn’t it?” he asked. A smile played across his lips as he took in a slow deep breath.
A Reminder
I nodded and gazed out at the masterpiece the Lord had created. “It sure does,” I replied. But when I looked up, he was gone. He was nowhere to be found. The Bible tells us we entertain angels without knowing. Had the Lord sent an angel to remind me that sight had nothing to do with my eyes? That it, in fact, had everything to do with my heart. Slowly, I bowed my head and closed my eyes as I continued to witness God’s creation with my heart, and I worshiped the Lord.
No matter where life takes you on your journey, God is there. He is worthy to be worshipped in the chaos, in the ordinary, and in the silence.
Challenge
Take time this week to step outside and worship the Lord of the universe with His creation. Feel the cold breeze on your skin, feel the warmth of the sun on your face, and just listen. Hear creation worshiping God their creator. God is worthy of our worship.
Revelation 5:13 I heard every creature in heaven, on earth, under the earth, on the sea, and everything in them say: Blessing and honor and glory and dominion to the One seated on the throne, and to the Lamb, forever and ever!
