God is Our Judge

When you feel that disapproving gaze from others, remember only God is our judge. Have you ever been judged for who you are? Maybe you’ve been criticized for what you’ve done or didn’t do. Ultimately the only opinion that matters is God’s.

Witch Trials

While in Salem, Massachusetts at the beginning of April, I visited the historical sites. It’s known for the infamous witch trials of 1692. Between 150-200 people were judged to be witches and were sent to prison. Nineteen people were hung and one man was tortured to death. This does not include those who died in prison. Testimony was accepted that would never hold up in court today such as spectral (ghostly) evidence and afflictions. Judgments were made based on accusations of girls ages 9 to 20.  So, what caused the Puritans to act so maliciously especially when they were supposed to be Godly people? I believe there may have been multiple factors that played into it such as fear, jealousy, and self-righteousness.

Disapproval

Today these factors can still play a part in how people judge others. However, it does make me assess my belief in what I’m doing or about to do when I receive disapproving and discouraging words from others. Often, I’ll ask myself, “Have I prayed about this?” “Have my actions offended someone?” Did I make a mistake or sin? If I did, I repent and ask for forgiveness from God and the person I’ve offended. I realize they may not forgive me, but if I earnestly repent God will, and that’s what’s most important.

Another thing I have learned is that not everyone will agree with how you live your life. When my husband and I decided to homeschool, a few family members were judgmental concerning our decision. We assessed their opinion but ultimately knew this was what God was calling us to do despite their objections. Years later they came to us and told us how well they thought we did.

While some people have strong opinions, others are always unhappy. They think their way is right, and they “mean well.” Then, there are those who are jealous and may not want you to succeed. If you have these people in your life, keep your distance the best you can, although it is still prudent to assess what they say.

Christian Judgement

Is there a time for Christians to make judgments? The Bible says, yes. However, not in the way people usually judge others. John 7:24 tells us to, “stop judging according to outward appearances; rather judge according to righteous judgments. For instance, taking the Lord’s name in vain, cheating, and stealing, must be addressed immediately. These go against the two greatest commandments Jesus taught in Matthew 22:36-41. If you are unsure how to address an action, seek the Lord. The Bible tells us in 1 Corinthians 2:15 to righteously judge, “But he who is spiritual judges all …” which means by the Holy Spirit within us.

Don’t Attack

After seeking the Lord, we don’t attack them and hit them over the head with the Bible. We pray and ask the Holy Spirit to open up an appropriate time to speak to them. Then, we share scripture with them. Remember, it is not our job to convict their hearts. Our job is to speak truth, in love, into their lives. Let it be a respectful conversation between two people. If it is not received well, ask them to pray about it. Then pray for them daily as you continue to love them no matter what.

Causing Pain

Making a judgment can cause pain that will last forever if not done in love. In the case of the witch trials of Salem, those accused were not spiritually judged. There was no love involved. The judgments seemed to be made out of fear and a self-righteous attitude. Fortunately, God’s word tells us in Romans 8:28 that He’ll work all things for good for those who love Him.  Maybe the accused reflected on their relationship with Christ while in jail. If they didn’t know Him personally, I hope they repented of their sins and gave their life to Him. Maybe those outside of the jail reassessed their relationship with God. Only God knows how He used this human judgmental travesty for good.

Well Done

Spiritual judgment can cause havoc in life. We might lose our job or a friendship. Sometimes it has caused a rift in families. Ultimately, God is our judge. We must be sure we are doing what God has called us to do. If we are, then only God’s opinion matters, and He will bless us for following Him. God’s accolades are all we need. I want to hear, “Well done good and faithful servant” (Matthew 25:23).

Search Me, O God

In conclusion, we should continue to pray Psalm 139:23-24, “Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me, and know my anxieties; and see if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” If someone comes to us in a judgmental way, stop and pray about it. Ask the Lord if there are changes you need to make. Is there someone the Lord has prompted you to discuss something with? First, seek the Lord and ask Him for the scriptures you need to share with them. Then ask the Holy Spirit to give you a time and the words to speak to them. Despite how that conversation goes, pray for that person regularly.

God, Our Judge

In the end, the only thing that matters is God is our judge and He judges righteously. As Christians, we must share God’s word so others know of His ultimate judgment. That, it’s by God’s grace that He justifies us through the redemption of Christ Jesus (Romans 3:21-28).  Do you have a personal relationship with Christ? Challenge

Have you felt judged lately? Is there a scripture that backs up what they have said? Go to Father God and ask Him for wisdom and insight and an open heart to receive it. If a change needs to be made, ask God for the strength. If you are doing what God has called you to do, pray for the person who brought judgment to you, forgive them, and let it go.
