God Is Ever-Present: Even When I’m Distracted

By Stacey Barkley

I was hiking alone on a quiet trail, just me, the birds, and the steady crunch of leaves and rocks under my boots. My focus was on where I was placing each foot. The rocks were loose and roots stuck up everywhere. If I’m honest, my thoughts were equally uneven. I was replaying conversations, sorting my to-do list, and mentally preparing myself for a difficult week.

That’s when my friend Joyce’s voice broke through the noise in my head. “Don’t forget to look up.”

She’d said it on a previous hike, noticing how often I kept my eyes on the ground instead of taking in the view. Her gentle reminder echoed in my mind.

I stopped walking, and I looked up.

Suddenly, I was flooded with what I had been missing. The gentle sway of the treetops, the flicker of sunlight dancing through the leaves, the quiet invitation of God’s presence. It was all around me.

Why We Get Distracted

Distraction sneaks in without warning. It’s not just about noise or busy schedules, It’s about our attention being tugged away from what matters most.

Sometimes it’s worry. Sometimes it’s a deep ache in our hearts. Sometimes it’s simply the demands of everyday life. We live with phones buzzing, thoughts racing, calendars full, and hearts pulled in a dozen directions.

And in the swirl of it all, it can feel like God gets quieter or even farther away. The truth is, He hasn’t moved.

He Remains Steady

One of the greatest comforts in Scripture is this: God is unshakably present. Our scattered minds and restless thoughts don’t make Him less attentive. Psalm 46:1 tells us, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” Very present. Not distant. Not conditional. Not checking out when we check out.

Psalm 139:2-3 adds, “You know when I sit down and when I stand up; You understand my thoughts from far away… You are aware of all my ways.” Even when our thoughts are halfway across town or tangled in worry, God is fully aware. He isn’t distracted by our distractions. He sees it all and stays close.

He Sees Me, Even When I Don’t See Him

I’ve had many moments like that hike, when I was physically present but mentally distant. Maybe you’ve had them too. For instance, talking to someone but barely hearing them or praying but not really engaging your heart.

And yet, God remains with us. Isaiah 49:16 reminds us, “Look, I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands.” Even when I’m not looking up; even when my eyes are on the trail and my thoughts are tangled, He sees me. (If you’d like to read more about El Roi, The God who see me, read God is All-seeing – He See You.) God doesn’t withdraw when I get distracted. He doesn’t fold His arms and wait until I “come back.” His presence is not a reward for my focus. It’s a reflection of His unchanging character. In fact, James 1:17 tells us that He “doesn’t change like shifting shadows.”

A Gentle Invitation to Refocus

Distraction is part of life, but so is the invitation to pause, breathe, and look again.

Just like Joyce’s words on that hike, God whispers to us, “Don’t forget to look up.” Look up from your worry. Look beyond your to-do list. Look around and notice that He’s already here.

When we’re scattered, He’s still steady. When we drift, He remains.

Here are a few simple ways we can turn our attention back to Him during the day:

  • Breath a prayer: A short, whispered “Jesus, You are here,” can help reset our heart.
  • Creation cues: The shape of a cloud, a beautiful flower, or the surprise of a deer in the woods remind us that we’re not alone.
  • Scripture moments: Verses tucked into corners of our day either on sticky notes, phone screens, or tucked in a planner, serve as little reminders that point back to Him.
  • Stillness: Not as a reward, but as a gift. Even 60 seconds of quiet can shift our heart toward Him.

When I’m Distracted, God Is Not

Sometimes we worry that our distracted hearts disappoint God. What if, instead, those very moments are opportunities to be gently drawn back to Him?

Just like I stopped on the trail and finally looked up, you and I can stop mid-thought, mid-task, or mid-worry and remember: God is here.  He’s not frustrated with our wandering. He’s simply faithful. His presence isn’t dependent on our focus. It’s guaranteed by His character.

As I continued that hike, I found myself repeating Joyce’s words over and over: “Don’t forget to look up.”

I wonder if God says the same to us.

Look up, child.
I’m still here.
I never left.

Reflection Questions

  1. When have you felt mentally distracted or spiritually distant lately?
  2. What “view” might you be missing as you focus on the rocky path?
  3. What simple step could help you pause and reconnect with God today?

A Prayer for the Distracted Heart

Lord, thank You that You are ever-present, even when my mind drifts and my focus fails. Help me to pause, to breathe, and to look up. Thank You for never leaving even when I forget to notice. Remind me today that I am seen, loved, and held by You. Amen.
